Holla at your hoohah: the lowdown on cervical screening.

Okay, so let’s chat about something super important—cervical screenings or the ‘pap smear’. Yep, when we say ‘get her checked’, we really mean it—it’s the best way to look after your bestie down there.

Why get it done? We’re testing for the HPV virus, which can lead to cervical abnormalities or cervical cancer. Catching it early is key!

What is HPV?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can cause cervical issues and even cancer. Getting regular screenings can help catch HPV-caused issues early and lower your chance of getting cervical cancer. So, don't be shy about talking to your GP about when to get checked and if the HPV vaccine is right for you!

The lowdown on the test

What’s the deal? It’s a quick check to make sure everything’s A-OK down there. It’s safe and easy and does not impact virginity.

The process: You'll lie back, relax (or at least try to), and a tiny brush will collect some cells from your cervix. It’s a bit awkward and can be a bit uncomfortable (we know, we’ve all been there), but it doesn’t hurt—promise!

How often? Regularly! Your doc will let you know the best schedule for you.

Where to do it: You can get it done at your GP’s office or even maybe with a self-testing kit at home. Yep, you’ve got options!

What you can ask for at your GP

Getting it done with your GP? There’s some things you can ask for…

  • Got a male GP? You can ask for a female staff member to join you in the room.

  • You can  ask for an interpreter to help you understand what the doctor is saying

  • Unsure about going alone? you can take someone with you ( friend, husband, child etc).

  • More comfortable doing it yourself? can choose to collect a sample by yourself under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

What happens if it comes back positive?

A positive result means abnormal cells were found on your cervix. It doesn't mean you have cancer, but more tests are needed to understand what's going on. Your doctor may suggest a colposcopy or other tests.
