Knowing your team
Why it matters
When it comes to managing your health, getting to know your healthcare team can make a significant difference. Building strong relationships with your doctors, dentist, and other healthcare professionals is well worth your time.
Your healthcare team typically includes
Trusted Friends and Family: They provide essential emotional support, transportation, and help with basic care needs. Their encouragement can be invaluable in your health journey.
General Practitioner (GP): Your GP is a key figure who informs you about treatments and available healthcare options. They’re your primary point of contact for general health concerns and routine care.
Dentist: Regular visits to a dentist or dental practice are crucial for maintaining your oral health. They help keep your teeth and gums in top condition.
Optometrist: If you wear glasses or have vision concerns, an optometrist is essential for maintaining sharp vision and preventing eye issues.
Pharmacist: A local pharmacy is where you can pick up your medications and other health supplies. While you may not see the same person each visit, frequenting the same pharmacy can help build rapport and enhance your overall experience.
There may be additional members of your healthcare team not listed above, but that doesn't diminish their importance. Everyone’s health needs are unique and extend beyond primary providers. Depending on your specific needs, you might also work with professionals such as Gynecologists, obstetricians, Dermatologists, Orthodontists, Breast Health Specialists and Nutritionists/Dietitians.
Put it on paper ( your phone)
When visiting a doctor, you might be asked about your other specialists. This information helps ensure that your care is coordinated and comprehensive. Sharing details about your other healthcare providers allows your doctor to understand the full scope of your treatment, avoid potential conflicts or duplications in care, and work together with your specialists to develop the most effective and cohesive plan for your health.
If you have trouble remembering the members of your team, consider writing them all down with their contacts.
